The Grace of Christ be with you!

God sent Christ into the world in order to seek out and save the lost but also as a dissident who spoke up for the oppressed. The church is now charged to carry on both ministries. Yet since the church understands God as the all-powerful creator & sustainer of the world, why does the prophet Samuel have to sneak around in order to carry out God’s commands on behalf of the oppressed?

  • Is God testing Samuel’s (and our) trust?

  • Is God “working behind the scenes? Why?

  • Why is Samuel, who trusts God, nervous?

  • What does this story tell us about God?

  • What does it tell us about role of church?

Christ embodied God’s will when he chose to die at the hand of his oppressors rather than side with them. Samuel, too, knew the risks involved but did not take counsel of his fears. The Holy Spirit calls the church to also be dissidents who refuse to side with the oppressors or let fear keep us silent.

Blessings, Will
