The Grace of Christ be with you!
Both the prophets in the time of Isaiah and John the Baptist want to inspire the people to trust in God. Yet in both instances, the people of God were subject to foreign powers with no army to protect them. So, what did the prophets proffer to the people to inspire their continued faith & hope in God?
God seeks to comfort his people.
God is on the move to save them.
All flesh is grass-God’s word lasts.
The prophets understood an important point that the people of Israel (& the church) often lose sight of as they call on the messiah to lead them. None of the elements of their former national existence-their armies, city walls, temple, etc., had protected the people from their neglect of their covenant with God. Their hope is in God, not armies.
Merry Christmas! Will
