The Grace of Christ be with you!
The setting in which Jesus told the parable of the Good Samaritan was classic match-up between the law of God and the grace of God. The lawyer who questions Jesus wants to test Jesus according to the law. Jesus, however, is lord of the law and instead maneuvers the lawyer to answer the questions himself and he, Jesus, passes judgment on him. How does grace answer the lawyer’s questions?
WHAT MUST I DO TO INHERIT ETERNAL LIFE?
-“What must I do” implies a legal requirement.
-“Inherit” implies grace. An inheritance is freely given.
WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR?
-The lawyer asks for a legal definition of “neighbor” so that one can know who they are obligated to help.
-Jesus, however, gives a moral definition of “neighbor.” Neighborliness is a quality of one’s character.
In the end, the law of God is no match for the grace of God. In truth, I believe that the lawyer’s questions were merely a ploy to try and lure Jesus into giving an answer that he could judge. Still, Jesus not only outmaneuvered the lawyer he also answered both questions in a much unexpected way in which the grace of God shown brightly.
